How to dispose of and use fireplace ash properly – here’s how to do it safely

Fireplace ash can still contain embers many hours after the fire has gone out – even if it looks grey and cold on the surface. Wait at least 24 hours before removing the ash from the fire box. Only then can you be sure that there are no hidden embers left.

To remove the ash, you can use a set of fireplace tools to scoop it out or a special ash vacuum for a clean and dust-free removal. Many Attika stoves and fireplace inserts are fitted with an ash grate and a handy ash drawer – this makes removal much easier.

Place the ash you have removed into a fireproof metal bucket and leave it in a safe place for at least two days – until the ash has cooled down completely. Never put warm or hot ash into a plastic container or in the ordinary household rubbish – this can lead to dangerous fires.
In most areas, completely cooled-down fireplace ashes can be disposed of with your ordinary household rubbish. To be on the safe side, lightly dampen the ashes before placing them in the bin bag. As disposal regulations may vary from region to region, Attika recommends checking with your local waste management authority or chimney sweep to find out about the applicable rules.

Fireplace ash is excellent as a natural cleaning agent for the fire-viewing pane. Lightly dampen a ball of newspaper or kitchen roll, dip it into the cold ash and rub the pane with it. Then polish it with a dry cloth. The result is amazing – without any chemical cleaning products at all.

No – in fact, it’s better not to. A thin layer of cold ash on the firebox floor acts as insulation and makes it easier to reignite the fire. For models with an ash grate or ash drawer, the ash should be removed when the grate or drawer starts to fill up.
