Fire FAQ - for cosy hours by the fire.

Experience cosiness and functionality in perfect harmony with our stoves and fireplaces. In our FAQ section, we have compiled answers to the most frequently asked questions about these special heat sources for your home.

Before buying the wood fireplace

Which stove should I buy?

There are a few factors to consider when choosing a stove. Deciding on the shape, size and materials of the stove is a question of taste, heating requirements and in which rooms the stove will be installed. Arrange a non-binding appointment with a dealer who can show you the right options for your home. You can find your nearest dealer here.

Which stove suits me?

As the stove is not just a source of heat, but also a piece of furniture that must match your interior and personal style, this question is central. Of course, the basic question of fuel should be asked first. Once this has been clarified, Attika offers you a wide range of stoves and fireplace inserts. Our fireplaces are known for their perfect finish and long service life. To guarantee this, we only use selected, high-quality materials and raw materials. All Attika fireplaces currently on sale fulfil the strictest environmental and quality requirements.

Be inspired by our products on the website and make an appointment with your local dealer.

How much does an Attika wood stove or wood fireplace cost?

The price of an Attika wood stove or wood fireplace depends on the model and the options selected. These include, for example, ElectronicAIR™, heat-storage module© or other features.

Attika wood stoves and wood fireplaces are sold through the network of qualified Attika dealers. If you are interested in a product, please contact a dealer near you.

The dealer will provide you with a personalised quote for the model you require. This will take into account, amongst other things, the selected features and the specific on-site installation requirements.

How much does it cost to install a wood stove?

The cost of installing a wood stove depends on the structural conditions of your home and the desired outcome. It is therefore not possible to give a flat-rate price.

Please contact an Attika dealer in your area. They will assess the situation in your home and advise you on the most suitable installation.

How many kW should a wood-burning stove have?

The kW rating indicates the output of a system and how much radiant heat the appliance emits. However, the actual heat output depends on the amount of wood selected by the user. The size of the room is crucial for a pleasant room climate. Each kW of heat output can heat an area of 10 m2 (approx. 25 m3 room) (in newer buildings with good insulation). Your specialist dealer can advise you individually on this issue.

What is the difference between a stove and a fireplace insert?

A stove is a free-standing stove (see figure 1). A fireplace insert can be installed individually (see figure 2).

Wood fireplace insert VISIO 3 fits perfectly as a three-sided fireplace between the living room and kitchen

What requirements must the chimney / fireplace fulfil?

The chimney must be suitable for the wood stove, its location and the applicable legal requirements. These requirements may vary depending on the country, region or federal state.

As every chimney is different/en/service-attika/dealer-search, the situation should always be assessed on site. To do this, please contact your local dealer or chimney sweep.

Which air control system is best for my wood stove – manual, CleverAIR™ or ElectronicAIR™?

Attika wood stoves offer three types of air control, depending on the model: manual, CleverAIR™ or ElectronicAIR™. The most suitable option depends on the wood stove, the chimney, the existing flue system and the level of ease of use you require.

With manual air control, you regulate the air supply yourself. This option may be suitable depending on the chimney and draught conditions, for example if the wood stove is connected to a large-diameter flue tube and the air supply needs to remain open for longer.

CleverAIR™ automatically regulates the air supply during combustion – without the need for electricity. You simply load dry wood and light the fire. CleverAIR™ automatically supplies the fire with the correct amount of primary, secondary and tertiary air during each firing phase. This reduces the risk of operating errors, promotes clean combustion, low emission levels and efficient use of the firewood.

ElectronicAIR™ is Attika’s electronic burn-off control system. It measures the combustion temperature and automatically regulates the air supply via an electronic control unit. This promotes controlled combustion and consistently low emission levels of fine dust and CO.

An Attika dealer can advise you on which air control system is best suited to your wood stove, your flue system and your requirements.

Can I use the fireplace insert as a partition wall?

Of course. Many of our fireplace inserts fulfil the function of a partition wall and can be used as an eye-catcher in the living room. Such as the VISIO 3:1 or VISIO tunnel.

Wood fireplace VISIO TUNNEL stands in the centre of the brightly furnished room yet still allows a view from the living room to the dining room

Can I install a wood stove in a small room?

Yes, a wood stove can also be installed in a small room. It is important that the model, firebox size and heat output are suitable for the room.

For smaller rooms, we recommend wood stoves with a small firebox, such as the compact Q-TEE 2 from Attika. Models made from soapstone or wood stoves with a heat-storage module© are also recommended for smaller rooms.

How can I tell if a wood stove is of good quality?

You can recognise a high-quality wood stove by, amongst other things, the finish of the firebox door, how it operates, the hinges and the seals. It’s best to check these points directly at a dealer.

Our tip: open and close the firebox door several times at the point of sale:

  • Does it open easily and close completely? Does it lock automatically?

  • Does the hinge run smoothly?

  • Does the closing sound pleasant?

  • Does the handle fit comfortably in your hand?

  • Does the door feel solid, compact, airtight and heavy?

  • Are the seals on the inside of the door neatly fitted?

A special function is the Self-Locking System© (SLS©), developed by Attika designers in Switzerland. This allows the firebox door to be opened easily with a gentle pull and in an ergonomic motion.

It’s best to have the Self-Locking System© demonstrated to you by a local Attika dealer.

Can I install a wood stove or wood fireplace in a Minergie or low-energy house?

Yes, this is possible if the wood stove or wood fireplace is installed as a room air independent unit. In this case, the combustion air is not drawn from the room but is supplied from outside in a controlled manner. To achieve this, the required fresh air is channelled from outside to the wood stove via a pipe or duct.

For almost all Attika wood stoves and wood fireplace inserts, this connection can be made via the AIR system. Depending on the model and installation situation, the air supply can be routed through the floor or the rear wall.

Please always observe the country-specific regulations and have the plans checked by a qualified professional.

Installing the wood fireplace

Who installs the stove?

We recommend that you have the installation of your stove carried out by a stove fitter/Hafner. This ensures professional installation and correct connection to the flue gas system. Find your local Attika specialist partner.

Can I install the stove myself?

We recommend that you have the installation of your stove carried out by a specialist. Professional installation and correct connection to the flue gas system ensure a well-functioning stove and compliance with legal requirements. Your local dealer can provide you with further information.

I’d like to replace my old wood-burning stove. What do I need to do?

Please contact a fireplace installer or Attika dealer in your area. Based on your home’s layout and your heating requirements, they will be able to recommend the best possible solution for you.

What distances do I need to observe when installing a wood stove?

The minimum clearances between a wood stove and combustible materials depend on the stove model, its version and its position in the room. The specifications in the installation manual, as well as local fire safety and building regulations, are decisive.

You will find the minimum clearances from walls, furniture, combustible building components and other materials specified by the manufacturer in the installation manual for your wood stove. These clearances must be observed during planning and installation.

The floor in front of and beneath the wood stove must also be protected if it is made of combustible material. A base plate or underlay made of non-combustible material is often used for this purpose.

In addition, different building regulations and fire safety regulations apply depending on the country, region or local authority. You should therefore clarify the requirements with the relevant specialist (chimney sweep/fire safety authority) before installation.

I don't have a chimney. Can I still have a stove or fireplace?

No. To install a wood stove or wood fireplace insert, you always need a working chimney.

For legal reasons, it is not permitted to light a wood fire without a suitable chimney. If there is no chimney, electric fires or bioethanol fireplaces offer an alternative.

Electric fires are only available in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, France and the Netherlands.

Note for Switzerland:

In Switzerland, Bioethanol fireplaces with a heat output of more than 2 kW may not be operated without a fireplace connection.

Can I connect my stove to an old chimney system?

Yes, provided the dimensions of the wood stove and the flue system are compatible. It is essential that the stove and flue function technically as a single unit.

The flue is the heart of the wood stove. Therefore, the smoke outlet and the flue system should be as well-matched as possible. Ideally, the flue system should have the same diameter as the stove’s smoke outlet.

Most Attika wood stoves have a smoke outlet with a diameter of 150 mm.

In addition, the flue system should ideally be at least 4 metres long, have as few changes of direction as possible, and horizontal sections should be kept as short as possible.

What does outdoor air mean in the context of a wood stove?

Outside air is fresh air that is supplied directly to a wood stove from outside. It serves as combustion air and is not drawn from the room.

This is particularly relevant in modern, well-insulated homes, where there may be insufficient air in the room to ensure clean combustion. At Attika, this external air supply is known as the AIR System. The AIR System can be connected to almost all Attika wood stoves.

Please always observe the country-specific regulations.

Can I connect my wood stove to a flue tube with a diameter of 200 mm?

Yes, provided that the smoke outlet on your wood stove also has a diameter of 200 mm, ideally. The dimensions of the wood stove and the smoke system should not differ too greatly from one another.

How large must the safety distances to non-flammable materials be?

There are no fixed regulations for the distance to the stove for non-flammable materials. Theoretically, a stove can be placed directly against a concrete wall, for example. However, we do not recommend this. We recommend leaving a distance of about 5-10 cm to the wall. This not only looks better, but also has practical advantages. It is easier to clean behind the stove or to repaint the wall. This applies to both standing and rotating stoves. You should also plan for a little distance around these to ensure the same flexibility and aesthetics.

What regulations apply in Germany regarding the base plate for wood stoves?

In Germany, the base plate of a wood stove must comply with the applicable fire safety regulations. According to the DE standard, it must extend at least 50 cm in front of the firebox opening and at least 30 cm on each side.

Measurements are taken from the firebox opening of the wood stove. These minimum dimensions protect the floor from flying sparks and falling embers.

You can find a detailed diagram showing where to take these measurements here.

How is the safety distance measured upwards?

The safety distances to the combustible ceiling are specified from the top edge of the stove door. The safety distances are different for each stove. You can find the exact details for your stove in the installation manual in the Downloads section.

Wood fireplace in operation

Which firewood / wood should I use?

You can use almost any type of natural wood as firewood. The quality of the firewood contributes a lot to a beautiful fire. We recommend well-stored hardwoods such as beech, birch or oak, as these give plenty of embers and a quiet fire. Use well and long-dried logs.

How should firewood be stored?

Firewood should be stored out of the elements and raised off the ground to protect it from ground damp.

The ends of the wood logs should face outwards, and there should be sufficient space between the ground and the logs to allow air to circulate freely.

Enclosed spaces such as garages or cellars are not suitable for storing firewood.

Bring the logs indoors into the warmth a few days before burning them. This allows them to dry out further. Wood storage units in various designs are suitable for temporary storage.

How much moisture can the firewood have?

The drier the wood, the higher the usable energy consumption. The wood should have a moisture content of 17 - 20 %. The moisture content can be determined using a wood moisture meter.

How do I get the best possible fire in a wood stove?

Getting the best possible fire in a wood stove depends on lighting it correctly and operating it properly. We explain the most important steps in our useful tip and in the lighting video.

Can I burn wood briquettes in my wood stove?

Yes, wood briquettes can be used in a wood stove. However, the quantity must be adjusted, as wood briquettes are denser and have a higher calorific value than traditional firewood.

Wood briquettes are made from machine-pressed wood waste such as sawdust and wood shavings. They contain less moisture than traditional firewood and have a higher density. As a result, a single briquette contains more energy.

Wood briquettes have a calorific value of approx. 5 kW/kg. By comparison, good-quality, standard firewood has a calorific value of approx. 4.4 kW/kg. To ensure that the maximum fuel load for the wood stove is not exceeded, wood briquettes should be broken up and used only in appropriate quantities.

As a guideline, allow approximately 1 kg of wood briquettes per hour.

What fuels should I avoid using in a wood stove?

Painted, laminated, impregnated or plastic-coated wood, as well as waste materials, must not be placed in the fire box. Do not burn painted waste wood, chipboard, plywood, nut shells, pine cones, newspaper, coal or household waste.

Burning these materials can produce exhaust gases that are harmful to health and the environment. These harm the surrounding area and can also damage the wood stove.

Can you barbecue using a wood stove or a wood fireplace?

We do not recommend barbecuing in a wood stove or wood fireplace. Barbecuing can produce grease residues which build up in the fire box or on the stove cladding. These residues are often difficult to remove.

How can I reduce my wood consumption in my wood stove?

The amount of wood consumption in a wood stove or wood fireplace insert is influenced by various factors. In our blog post, we explain which factors are relevant and how you can reduce your wood consumption.

How can I make a wood stove safe if I have a small child?

You can secure a wood stove with a safety gate or guard. This ensures there is sufficient distance between the child and the hot wood fireplace.

Place the guard in front of the wood stove so that young children cannot get too close to the hot surfaces.

Never leave young children unattended near a wood stove.

The air supply to the wood stove cannot be adjusted. Why is that?

If the wood stove no longer responds to the air control, in most cases the door is not closed properly. This allows air to enter the fire box unchecked, and the air supply cannot be reduced as intended.

You should therefore first check whether the door is fully closed. You can find out how to check this in the next question: «The stove door won’t close. What can I do?»

The stove door no longer closes. What can I do?

To find out whether the door closes properly, use the paper test: Clamp a sheet of paper in the door and close the firebox door. If the sheet of paper can be moved, the door is not closed properly. Check whether something is jammed in the ash drawer or whether it has not been inserted correctly.

You can also take a close look at the catch on the door closing system (SLS). If it is folded in and the spring is not tensioned, the door will no longer close. With light pressure, the catch can be carefully (sharply) pushed back into place. If none of these cases apply and the door still does not close, please call your dealer.

Candle wax on the soapstone stove. What can I do?

You can place a piece of blotting paper/floss paper on the areas with candle wax and then run a hot iron over them. The stove must be cold. You can also gently sand over the areas with fine-grained sandpaper. The soapstone is a soft stone and therefore the candle wax can penetrate deep into the stone. The more you fire the stove, the faster the wax will come off.

How big can the wood logs be?

A wood log should not be too large. Ideally, it should have a weight of around 700 to 800 grams and be no more than 33 cm long. Two smaller wood logs generally burn better and more cleanly than a single large log.

Please also refer to the information in the user manual in the Downloads section.

How much wood is needed to achieve the perfect temperature in the VIVA L oven?

If the VIVA L oven is fired correctly, you will reach a baking chamber temperature of 160 - 180 °C and a base plate temperature of 260 - 300 °C after about one hour. To achieve this, it requires approximately 2–2.5 kilograms of wood per hour.

How much firewood should I use?

The amount of firewood required depends on the wood stove, the size of the fire box, the desired heat output and the method of firing. On average, it is around 1.5 kg of firewood per hour.

The exact amount required varies depending on the output and energy efficiency of the wood stove. As a guide, a single log for a wood stove should weigh less than 1 kg. Depending on how it is cut, this usually corresponds to 1 to 2 wood logs.

You can find the recommended and maximum permitted amount of wood for refilling in the relevant installation manual under the Downloads section.

Does a wood stove require electricity?

A classic wood-burning stove works entirely without electricity. It requires neither internet nor battery nor power socket.

A wood stove burns independently. It provides warmth and comfort. And above all, reliability. This is a reassuring feeling, especially during a power outage in the cold months.

We would be happy to advise you on the advantages of a wood stove. Visit us in Cham or a dealer near you.

Maintenance of the wood fireplace

How do I clean my wood stove?

Always clean your wood stove when it is cold. If you have a steel stove, you can clean the outside with a clean, dry cloth. Take care not to cause any scratches.

If the outside is made of soapstone or natural stone porto, it can be cleaned with mild soapy water using a damp cloth.

Clean the glass ceramic pane with a suitable glass ceramic cleaner. Do not spray the cleaning agent directly onto the pane; spray it onto a cloth instead. This will prevent damage to the door seals.

Do I need to clean the glass pane on my wood stove, even if it’s almost clean?

Yes, the glass panel should be cleaned regularly, even if it is only slightly soiled. This ensures a clear view of the fire and prevents deposits from having a lasting effect on the glass-ceramic surface.

During the combustion process, particles are produced which can stick to the glass panel. If these deposits are not removed regularly, some of their components may react with the glass-ceramic material.

Unsuitable cleaning agents can also damage the pane’s surface, particularly if residues remain on the pane and are exposed to high temperatures.

To prevent cloudy patches or a white film forming on the glass pane, the fire box should not be overheated and the pane should be cleaned regularly.

You can find further advice on proper cleaning in our useful tip.

How do I lubricate hinges on my stove?

Regular lubrication of all moving parts on the stove is essential for the stove to work properly. We recommend the use of Neoval or WD-40 sprays, as the use of other products can lead to the formation of odours or residues. Door latches, hinges and movable handles should be lubricated with a small spray.

When spraying, cover the coating with some household paper to avoid stains. Move the door back and forth slightly after lubricating. It is best not to use too much spray at once - instead, repeat the process regularly.

You can get the right lubricant from your local dealer and can count on their help if you have any questions.

Do I need to service my wood stove regularly?

Yes, we recommend regular maintenance of your wood stove. This will ensure that the fireplace remains in good working order and reliable for many years to come.

The fireplace and the flue tube should be inspected and cleaned annually by the relevant local chimney sweep.

Please enquire with your local dealer for further details.

How do I maintain my stove?

Maintenance of the stove is most suitable before the start of the heating season. You can carry out the maintenance yourself or have it done by a specialist. We recommend having a chimney sweep carry out the annual inspection and cleaning of the flue pipe. Remove ash residues from the firebox, ash grate and ash drawer of the wood-burning stove. Check the seals and replace damaged seals.

Lubricate all moving parts such as door hinges, door lock and door slide rails with a lubricating spray. The spray should not leave any deposits. Check the firebox lining (fireclay / Skamol). The strong temperature fluctuations can cause cracks, but these have no influence on the stove's functionality. The firebox lining only needs to be replaced if it crumbles out after years. Have a new firebox lining installed by a local fireplace fitter.

Why does my wood stove smell?

Odours may emanate from the wood stove if it has not been used for a long time. Dust and dirt can build up and cause odours when heated.

Clean the stove before using it again and make sure there are no visible residues on or inside the appliance.

What do you do with the ash from the wood stove?

Ash from a wood stove must be completely cool before disposal. Wait at least 24 hours before removing the ash from the fire box, then collect it in a fireproof metal bucket.

An ash grate and an ash drawer make it easier to remove the ash from the wood stove. Almost all Attika wood stoves and wood fireplace inserts are fitted with an ash grate and an ash drawer.

Any remaining ash residue in the fire box can be scooped out with a set of fireplace tools or removed using an ash vacuum.

Place the ash in a fireproof metal bucket and leave it to stand for at least 2 days. In most cases, the completely cooled ash can then be disposed of with your regular household waste.

Do the ashes have to be removed from the stove after each firing?

No, on the contrary. Cold ash in the firebox makes it easier to light the stove again.

Why does my wood stove produce smoke or soot?

Smoke in a wood stove can be caused by insufficient draught in the flue, damp wood or wood logs that are too large. Soot on the outside often forms when the door is opened too early or too quickly.

Do not open the door until the fire has gone out and the flames are no longer burning at a high height. If the door is opened whilst the flames are at a high height, soot may form on the outside of the wood stove.

Always open the door slowly and carefully.

My light-coloured stove has got traces of soot. What can I do?

If the door is left open for too long or too much smoke is produced when firing up, soot marks can appear above the firebox door on light-coloured stoves. The cleaning agent for light-coloured steel stove surfaces helps to remove these traces from parapet stoves with light-coloured paintwork such as white, sand, nickel or silver. It also reliably removes grease stains, oil stains and dirt and is specially designed for cleaning the outside of painted surfaces. The stove can be gently cleaned with a microfibre cloth or a Jemako cloth (Attika recommendation). The cleaning agent should not be used on dark surfaces (Attika lacquer colours black, mocha), as differences in shade may occur after use. Always follow the instructions in the product instructions for use.

How do I get a spare part for my fireplace?

You can obtain spare parts for your Attika fireplace from an Attika dealer. It is best to contact the dealer from whom you purchased your fireplace.

The dealer will identify the correct spare part, order it for you and, as a rule, also carry out the installation.

To ensure the correct spare part is ordered, the following details are helpful:

  • Name of the stove or fireplace

  • Year of manufacture

  • Serial number, visible on the appliance or on the CE mark

  • A photo showing the entire fireplace

  • A close-up photo of the spare part required

  • Invoice or proof of purchase from the dealer

If you do not know who originally sold and installed your Attika fireplace – for example, following the purchase of a property with an existing fireplace, or if the dealer has gone out of business – please contact a current Attika dealer in your area.

What is the difference between a wear part and a spare part?

Spare parts:
These are components that will not be damaged if a fireplace is used properly. In the event of a defect, it must be clarified with the dealer whether a warranty case exists. In the event of a warranty claim, Attika will decide how the damage is to be repaired. In the event of a repair, the dealer will ensure that a professional version is carried out.

Wearing parts:
These are components that are stressed by normal use of the stove and therefore wear out over time (seals, firebox linings, etc.). Wearing parts are always subject to a charge, comparable to the oil or tyres of a car.

How do I clean the outside of my white or light-coloured stove?

Clean the exterior of a white or light-coloured wood stove regularly and always before the next use if any stains are visible. This will prevent dirt or stains from becoming permanently burnt into the surface.

If dirt and stains are left on a steel wood stove, the heat can cause them to become permanently burnt into the surface.

For white or light-coloured steel surfaces, we recommend the RAIS wood-burning stove cleaning agent or lukewarm soapy water.

Always dry the surface after cleaning to prevent rust.

Can a wood stove with natural stone or soapstone cladding be repositioned, moved or dismantled?

Yes, a wood stove with natural stone or soapstone cladding can be repositioned, moved or dismantled. Particular care must be taken to ensure that the cladding is not damaged.

Particular care must be taken when removing the top plates. We recommend securing the side stones beforehand using a clamping kit to prevent them from falling out.

Health and environment - Wood fireplace

Does my stove still fulfil the 1st BImSchV in Germany?

If your stove is subject to BImschV1, this means that the stove may no longer be installed or relocated, but stoves that have already been installed may continue to be used. You can find out whether your Attika stove still fulfils the 1st BImSchV in Germany on the HKI Industrieverband Haus-, Heiz und Küchentechnik e.V. website. Go to the HKI website.

If your stove no longer fulfils the 1st BImSchV, please contact Attika's internal sales team. We will be happy to help you decide on a new stove and make you an interesting offer.

Can I have my wood stove retrofitted to comply with BImSchV Stage 2?

Yes, retrofitting may be possible. Whether it is advisable should be discussed with an Attika dealer, as replacing the wood stove may be more cost-effective depending on its age and condition.

The Federal Immission Control Ordinance (BImSchV) sets out regulations on air quality in Germany. These apply to wood stoves and wood fireplace inserts. As the legal requirements have changed, models installed before 22 March 2010 will not receive approval for use from 31 December 2024.

The aim of these regulations is to achieve the highest possible efficiency whilst keeping emissions as low as possible. To this end, wood stoves undergo extensive testing. The values determined during these tests are relevant at the time of installation and are checked by the chimney sweep.

Attika wood stoves are designed for a long service life and high performance, which reflects Attika’s quality promise. However, some older models were tested before the new regulations came into force. They must therefore be retrofitted or replaced to comply with BImSchV Stage 2.

One possible retrofit option is the installation of an active particulate filter, also known as a particle separator. This can help to meet the specified limit values.

Check with your Attika dealer to see whether this costly option is worthwhile for your wood stove. If your Attika wood stove has already been in use for many years, a complete replacement may be more cost-effective. Please contact the Attika sales team for a suitable quote.

Does my wood stove or wood fireplace comply with the 2022 Ecodesign Directive?

Whether a wood stove or wood fireplace complies with the 2022 Ecodesign Directive depends on the specific model and the tested performance values. Solid fuel heating appliances must meet the applicable minimum requirements in order to be sold on the European market.

The aim of the Ecodesign Directive 2022 is to reduce the environmental impact of energy-related products throughout their entire life cycle.

The Ecodesign Directive 2022 has been incorporated into EN 16510, which has applied to wood stoves and wood fireplace inserts since 9 November 2025.

Why are some Attika models less efficient than competitor models?

The wood-burning stove sector is above all a world of compromises between aesthetics, comfort and technology. Thanks to the customized-concept, Attika stoves offer many aesthetic and technical possibilities. For example, we offer the VIVA L model with or without side windows. The stove is also available with manual or electronic air regulation ElectronicAIRTM.

These factors have a direct influence on the performance of the product. At Attika, the products are tested in the combination in which they are least efficient. In this case, the energy efficiency of the VIVA L model with side windows and manual air regulation is tested and specified in the laboratory. Although the model without side windows and with ElectronicAIRTM achieves the higher performance, the lower values are given for Attika. This makes them difficult to compare with competitor offers, as the models can be combined in a wide variety of ways.

Basically, the automatic air regulation system ElectronicAIRTM achieves the best energy efficiency.

Are wood stoves and wood fireplaces CO₂-neutral?

The burning of wood is considered to be CO₂-neutral within the natural carbon cycle. When wood is burnt, the same amount of CO₂ is released as the wood absorbed whilst growing and would also have been released had it decomposed naturally.

Are stoves unhealthy / harmful to health? What is the indoor climate like?

When using your stove, you should always open the door slowly. In this way, you avoid the flue gases from the stove being blown into the room and affecting the indoor climate. With Attika's AIR system (external air supply), the stove burns room air independent and the room climate is not affected.

I have asthma and/or allergies. Can I have a wood stove or a wood fireplace?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this. If you have any health concerns, you should always consult your doctor.

The environment is important to me. Does a stove pollute?

With a wood stove, the fire is controlled. In other words, a stove pollutes far less than an outdoor campfire, for example. Attika stoves are subject to strict environmental and quality requirements. We are constantly working to reduce emissions from our stoves.

How harmful is stove smoke during pregnancy?

There is no reason to avoid a stove fire during pregnancy. This used to be the only way to heat old houses. If you have any doubts, please consult your doctor.

What does the European standard EN 16510 mean for wood stoves and wood fireplace inserts?

The European standard EN 16510 has been in force since 9 November 2025 and replaces several previous standards. These include, amongst others, EN 13240 for wood stoves and EN 13229 for wood fireplace inserts.

For manufacturers and importers, compliance with EN 16510 is a prerequisite for products to receive CE marking and be placed on the market in the European Single Market for the first time.

For private individuals, the change has no impact on existing and already installed fireplaces. Nor does it require any additional action on the part of end customers when purchasing a new fireplace.

Before buying the gas fireplace
