A light-flooded living space

with sweeping views of the East Frisian countryside.

The heart of the house is located on the upper floor.

Climbing the exposed concrete staircase, you walk straight towards the stove. Its central position visually connects the kitchen, dining and living areas.

When Heike and Stephan began planning the three Harlepadd holiday homes in Neufunnixsiel in 2022, they knew from the outset that the architecture should reflect the vastness of the East Frisian landscape while also creating sustainable, modern temporary homes.

As a civil engineer, it was important to Stephan to consider energy efficiency and design together from the outset. The result was three KfW efficiency houses with controlled living space ventilation, durable materials and a clear architectural line.

Local clinker bricks from a Wittmund factory, untreated larch wood and custom-made built-in furniture by regional craftsmen characterise the appearance.

Oiled oak parquet flooring, mineral surfaces and clean lines characterise the interior. The interior concept was developed by Heike Meinen with a keen sense of proportion, materiality and atmosphere. Custom-made furniture meets selected designer furniture; natural colours and minimalist forms create a calm, Nordic-inspired interior design.

A striking exposed concrete staircase leads to the upper floor. Beneath the open gabled roof with a ceiling height of almost five metres, there is a clearly structured living space with generous window fronts. The panoramic windows frame the landscape and enhance the sense of space.

At the centre of this level is the stove, deliberately positioned as an anchor point.

«Especially on windy days here on the North Sea coast, we realise once again how wonderful it is when the fire on the upper floor is visible from every room and gives the space its centre.»

Heike & Stephan Meinen

«It was important to us that the fire be visible from everywhere», says Heike, «which is why we deliberately chose the NEXO with its 3-sided glazing.»

Thanks to its positioning, the stove visually connects the kitchen, dining area and living area. The fire can be enjoyed from every perspective and lends structure and warmth to the open space.

On windy North Sea days in particular, the fireplace becomes the atmospheric focal point – it creates that cosy depth that completes the architecture.
